Friday Five: To note

Posted on June 5th, 2009 by annakjarzab

1. Joanna and I both posted yesterday on our A-Team blog: J on BEA, and me on what I’ve been doing while I’ve been waiting for book stuff to happen–namely, figuring out how I’m going to do my book trailer. We’re working on a way to auto feed those posts into this blog’s sidebar (or something, E and I are still hammering out details), so soon you won’t need me to tell you every time a new post goes up, but I’ll keep doing that for the time being. If you have anything you’d like us to talk about on there, BTW, just hit me up!

2. Also, on the hidden content: I’ve been getting a lot of great feedback from people who’ve found and liked the HC! I’m so glad you guys think it’s cool. I plan to do more of it (I’ve got a nice collection of things to post), but gradually, so I don’t flood the site with it all at once. Just in case, I feel I should point out that eventually all the dolls on the site will be optimized, not just the “hidden” ones on inside pages, and some of them already are. Hint hint.

3. That said, something else just went up. A little thing.

4. Oh, and Dia Reeves, one of my fellow Tenners and author of Bleeding Violet (January 5, 2010 y’all!), created a Listmania! of Tenners books on Amazon (the ones that are up; more will be added as they go up for preorder). There are so many awesome books I’m looking forward to reading, I really can’t wait for 2010 to roll around.

5. The word on the street is that AUT ARCs are coming next week! Of course I’ll be out of town, because the universe is totes on my side, and I don’t yet know how many I’m getting, but I know what I’ll be doing with them: giving them away right here on this site! Okay, not all of them. But some of them! And some of them I’ll be giving away on other sites! I have a very organized plan for this (I have no plan, but I believe one will come to me).

More hidden content

Posted on June 3rd, 2009 by annakjarzab

I know it’s been a while since new hidden content went up, but that’s because poor Eric was slaving away on this particular tidbit for a while. It’s up now, though! Go exploring and let me know what you think.

Hidden! Content! live

Posted on April 29th, 2009 by annakjarzab

Last night was weird. I got some good news yesterday afternoon (hopefully I’ll be able to tell you about it soon), and I spent most of the night trying to call my family and tell them about it, but nobody answered their damn phones! I thought they were talking to each other, but apparently they were all out.

So I was alone in my apartment and not getting a hold of anyone, and for some reason I thought it’d be a good time to log into my Mint profile and rearrange my budget (I was “using”–and by “using” of course I mean ignoring–the default one) because I’d really like to get an iPhone, if I can swing it financially. I’m trying really hard to live exclusively off of my salary and not supplement too much with book money, but I want to get an iPhone because I want access to my email and the Internet and Evernote and all the cool things that make it easier for me to be a writer, business-wise and creativity-wise, so I think it’s a solid career investment. This is not me rationalizing a fancy, trendy purchase! (Okay, maybe it is, but it doesn’t make the rationalization invalid.)

And then I was going a little nuts because my bedroom is so small and cramped and I’m sick of having to do all my work in a 9×10 closet and I need more space and I read Full of Snark every day and she just bought an apartment and I was all, “How can I swing buying an apartment?” LOL because I live in NEW YORK! Where everything is so stupid expensive you could cry. And I’d want to stay on the Upper West Side, which, while not the most expensive place to buy in the city, is certainly mostly out of my price range–if I even have a price range, which I don’t know because I don’t know how much money you need to sensibly purchase a home, even in this economy, in this city and whatnot. After lots of frantic Googling, I decided to just make it a goal to work up to buying an apartment in a couple of years and leave it at that, because calm down, girl, you can not afford to buy an apartment.

Anyway, it’s completely amazing that I was able to get anything productive done yesterday evening, but I was. I wrote over 1,000 words in GR, otherwise known as Book 3, which is about four pages. Already I’m deviating from my synopsis (which is of course nowhere near done; I’ve been jumping the gun and writing the stuff I already have planned because I’m so excited for this book I couldn’t wait to get started). Well, not necessarily deviating, but getting a little exploratory in my new domain. It’s so nice to be writing again.

My roommate was out of town on business yesterday, and when she got home we chatted for a while. It turns out that she’s been reading my book bit by bit and hadn’t told me, not wanting to say anything until she finished, but then she told me anyway so whoops. She said she thought she knew who did it but didn’t want to say anything to me because she’d be able to read my reaction (I’m the worst bluffer), so I had her email me her guess before I went to bed. I’m excited for her to find out whether or not she was right.

By the way, there’s some hidden content live on the site now. Happy hunting!

Get excited and make things

Look at my sweet mint green nails, y’all!

greennails

I am offish ready for spring. Now if the weather in New York could only catch up…

Tonight I finally got all the paperwork together to pay my estimated income tax for the first quarter of 2009. To offset the blerg caused by having to write a check for lots of money to the federal, state, and city (YES. WE PAY A CITY INCOME TAX. NEW YORK, I HATE YOU.), I decided to go through my AUT notebook and flag pages for HIDDEN! CONTENT! It’s making me really excited. There’s so much in here that I’d forgotten about and I’m so pumped for you guys to see it.

So far I’ve decided to put up at least three character profiles and two character manifestos, plus two scenes that I like because one of them changed so much in revision (neither my agent nor my editor might even recognize the scene, that’s how old it is) and one of them hasn’t changed much at all. I think the comparison will be interesting, once ARCs start floating around in the universe and people have something to compare them to. Eric has also promised to take a map I scribbled in my notebook and redraw it so that it makes a little bit more sense (and looks nicer; an artist, I am not); I think that’s key, because it might help readers of the book who are a little confused about the geography of the setting (I mean, I’ve tried to explain everything well, but my spacial skills are limited and as a reader I can always do with a map, y’know?). I have an idea for a video as well, although that probably won’t go up until late June.

And then there’s the SUPER SECRET HIDDEN CONTENT. I really want to put up the character manifesto I wrote for the killer, because it helped me finish my revisions immensely and I’m pretty proud of it. It is, of course, chock full of spoilers. It’s pretty much John Q Spoiler from Spoiler Town. So I think what I’m going to do is find a way to make it password protected, with a password only people who’ve read the book (or skipped to the end; I’ve been known to do that, so I forgive it in others) would know, and I won’t even take it live until after All Unquiet Things comes out (January 12, 2010, don’t forget!). And I may not even tell you about it when it does go live, so recall this post!

Squee! There’s so much fun stuff I can’t wait to show you. It’s crazy, because rereading this stuff has made me discover a lot about my own characters that I’d forgotten. Want a sneak peek?

Okay, so it’s backwards (LOL Photo Booth) and impossible to read due to blurriness, but I think you get the idea. And one more thing, because I’m addicted to Photo Booth today (although I did have to go into Photoshop and invert this because of the backwards text thing, which is why everything in the background suddenly seems on the wrong side); I bought this print last week and it came today. I thought it was especially appropriate for a writer. Now I just need to frame it and find some place to put it.

Update: Before I forget, any fans of the AUT playlist who wanted to listen to “Who Will Love Me Now?” can now do so via the link on the playlist page, because I finally uploaded it onto aTunes. And Wikipedia tells me that it is P.J. Harvey. Phew. Glad that’s settled.

Buzz

Even though I said I probably wouldn’t set up Google Alerts for myself or my book, I totally did, which I then regretted, because I would always get emails about blog posts I’d put up myself and, like, every use of the word “unquiet” on the Internet, which is not that many.

BUT! That changed yesterday. First, Kelsey at Reading Keeps You Sane named All Unquiet Things as her “Waiting on Wednesday” pick this week, which was so flattering. I actually just found out about Kelsey and her site a couple of days ago while perusing Gayle Foreman’s blog (I’m reading If I Stay right now and even though I’m only in the beginning, I can already tell it’s going to be very good) and added it to my Google Reader, only to click on it yesterday afternoon and see my cover (which is pretty much a hit with everyone, great news for me because I love it) front and center. Thanks Kelsey!

Also, an interview I did with fellow Tenner Christy Raedeke‘s blog went up last night. It’s my first official interview, which is terribly exciting, and Christy is hilarious and awesome, so I was really excited to be featured on Juvenescence. Christy’s done a lot of interviews with other Tenners, all of which are different and interesting, so I suggest heading over there and checking them out.

Futhermore, you’ll see that Eric fixed the comments problem. Things are going to be changing a little bit on this site for a few weeks–including the most important thing, which is the adding of the HIDDEN! CONTENT!–so don’t be alarmed if you see something new or weird or out-of-place, although if you notice a bug or catch a problem feel free to email me. Also, my blog roll was lost in transit from WordPress to…this thing that looks like WordPress but isn’t exactly that I use to update the site, but I plan to have that back up. I think I have to manually put all the links in again; it might take me some time to complete but I really want a comprehensive blog roll, so that’s coming.

Update: I just put up a post about the website (and my plans for HIDDEN! CONTENT!) on The A Team. Checkitowt! Also, if you have any ideas for what sort of hidden content you might want to see (so far I have some stuff, including a map for All Unquiet Things and scans of some of my handwritten character manifestos, but I can probably do a lot of different stuff–puzzles and playlists and secret contests and sneak peeks of material-in-progress. I’m totally open to suggestions) then comment here or at The A Team or email me.
